UK housing market’s outlook is ‘highly uncertain’, BOE warns

LONDON (Nov 30): The outlook for the UK housing market is “highly uncertain” after the vote to leave the European Union caused transactions to slow, the Bank of England said.

Record-low benchmark rates have sent property prices surging across the UK as homeowners borrow more to buy properties or refinance their loans. Mortgage lending to UK households rose 3.2% in the 12 months to September, the highest level since 2008, the central bank said in a financial stability report Wednesday.

Philip Morris looks beyond cigarettes with alternative products

LONDON (Nov 30): Philip Morris International, the world’s largest international tobacco company, said it could eventually stub out cigarette sales as it launched an alternative product in Britain on Wednesday.

Underlining the regulatory pressures facing the tobacco industry, a British court also on Wednesday rejected an appeal against new rules prohibiting the use of marketing such as logos or colours on cigarette packs.

S&P, Dow hit record highs as oil, bank stocks gain

(Nov 30): The Dow and the S&P 500 hit record intraday highs on Wednesday, fueled by gains in energy and bank stocks.

Oil prices soared 7.4% as some of the world’s largest producers agreed to curb oil output for the first time since 2008.

Shares of oil majors Exxon and Chevron rose more than 2% and were the top stocks on the S&P and the Dow.

The S&P 500 energy index rose 3.65% as oil prices were on track for their best day since February.

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 30): Malaysia Airlines Bhd saw passenger revenue for the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2016 (3Q16), increase by 12% over the previous quarter due to aggressive sales campaigns.

“Marketing campaigns were kick-started in August and September after a lull period, focusing on the all-inclusive value fares offered with no hidden extras,” it said in announcing its latest quarterly update today.

At least five dead after tornadoes rip through US South

(Nov 30): At least five people were killed and dozens more were injured after tornadoes tore through Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi overnight and into Wednesday morning, forecasters and local media reported.

Three people were killed in the night in Rosalie, a small community in northeastern Alabama, where at least one tornado was reported by a weather spotter, the National Weather Service said on its website.
